On Thursday November 7th The Fratellis played a show at The Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco California. Opening for them where two bands. Both of which come from the Los Angeles area.
The first band of the night was a female lead, driving rock band by the name of Conway. Conway played their debut album in its entirety. The band in general has some really great songs but seems timid and awkward on stage. They need a bit more time to get used to each other so that they can feel comfortable on stage and all have the same level of energy. On the plus side the lead singer never looses energy and continues to dance like crazy all night long.
The second band to play that night was The Ceremonies. The Ceremonies are a band that is quickly gaining traction after a great performance at this years CMJ Festival and through this tour. They are a 6 piece band with 3 singers that like to switch off lead vocals. All though they where packed onto that stage like sardines they managed to grab my attention and not let go. They also performed their debut album in its entirety and it is one to listen to. The Ceremonies are a band to keep your eye on for the upcoming years. I expect great things are to come from these guys.
After long anticipation the headlining band took the stage with great poise and what seemed to be amazement. They had a sold out show and it was packed to the brim in there. After a 4 year hiatus it is always iffy as to how many people will come out to the show but these guys managed to sell out nearly every stop of their US tour. The Fratellis wound up playing several hits off of their first album “Castello Music” along with several hits off of their new album “We Need Medicine”. They played some of their greatest tracks like “Flathead”, “Henrietta”, “Whistle For The Choir”, “Seven Nights Seven Days”, “Jeannie Nitro”, “We Need Medicine”, and many many more. With a setlist totaling at 20 songs. But just like any great band they saved the song that launched them into international stardom until the end. “Chelsea Dagger”. All in all a killer show and I hope to see more tours and performances across the US by the Fratellis.

If psychedelic, spacey electronica is your flavor of choice then you’ll be pleasantly surprised by Glass Animals. Glass Animals was formed in 2012 and has 2 EP’s to date. A very haunting, atmospheric first EP, “Leaflings”, sets the tone for Glass Animals and is only continued in their second and latest EP, “Glass Animals”. This newer album is just as haunting and melodic as the first but adds a pinch of indie pop. Glass Animals have made Dave Barley’s soulful vocals work smoother than butter with their psychedelic, space age sound. They are quite the treat to listen too. This band is one to keep your eyes on for great things to come in the future. Hopefully there will be a full length album in the spring time. For this EP we recommend “Psylla”, “Black Mambo”, and “Exxus”. You can find all info, tour dates, releases, and even listen to the entire “Glass Animals” Ep for free right here on their website: http://glass-animals.tumblr.com/media/.
Those of you with ADD will love White Denim. They go from blues boogie, hippie country, jazz rock and psychedelia faster then you can say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. At times it can be a bit to much to handle but when it lines up it sounds fantastic. White Denim is 4 piece band from Austin, Texas. When they first formed in 2005 they where a 3 part band. This 3 part band created 2 EP’s and 2 full length albums before expanding their line up to add second guitarist Austin Jenkins. Their released their first full length album as a 4 part “D” in 2011. After that they embarked on a tour with Wilco; the frontman of which graciously offered to help White Denim produce their 4th album “Corsicana Lemonade”. This new album tends to line up and grove a lot more than their previous albums. Some of our favorite tracks to jam out to include “At Night in Dreams”, “New Blue Feeling”, and “Pretty Green”. You can find out more about the band and the album at whitedenimmusic.com or you can hear their music for free at https://soundcloud.com/whitedenim.
Disco, New Wave, Indie Rock, Dance Pop. If anyone where to mention these genres individually several bands would come to mind. When combined your options become very limited. One of the newest bands to successfully bring all of these genres together is Pompeya. Pompeya is a newly formed band hailing from Moscow, Russia. Their first album was self-released and brought them a great deal of attention in their home country. After an extensive tour with the first album they signed to Los Angeles Record label “No Shame”. With this label they have come out with their US debut album “Tropical”. “Tropical” is hard hitting with very powerful melodies and some strong rhythmic sections. From the very first track they’ve got you hooked on and dancing. The melodies are catchy and fun to sing along to while the synth gives you a very upbeat electric feel. All in all this album eats, sleeps, and breathes Indie Pop. With some of our favorite singles such as “Power”, “Slaver”, and “Y.A.H.T.B.M.F” Pompeya is guaranteed to keep you hooked and entertained no matter what situation you are in. You can find their album at pompeya.com or hear it for free here: https://soundcloud.com/pompeya.
There are several artists who have attempted the combining of genres; but not many have succeeded the same way that Lissie has. Lissie has successfully created her own form of indie folk music. Being the granddaughter of an international barbershop quartet champion she grew up singing in theater productions. Eventually picking up the guitar to start playing her own songs at coffee shops. Lissie has done most of her touring and promoting in the U.K. but has also made some appearances in America including a very memorable performance at Bonnaroo Music Festival. In 2009 Lissie released her first full length album “Why You Runnin’”. In promotion of that album she toured the country alongside Ray LaMontagne.
Now in 2013 Lissie has released her second album “Back To Forever”. This second album is a lot less bitter heartbreak and a lot more rebellious tunes sprinkled with love songs told from different angles. Her single “Shameless” off of the new album is a laying out of her entire ideology in a three-minute song. “I don’t want to be famous, if I got to be shameless” is the most hard hitting line of this single.
Her new album “Back To Forever” is coated with sun-kissed, mid-70’s West Coast melodies and will have you singing along in no time. Our favorites include “Shameless”, “The Habit”, and “Further Away (Romance Police)”. You can see her new album at http://www.lissie.com. Hear it for free here: https://soundcloud.com/lissiemusic.
If history serves us well we know that Australia can bring us some of the worlds best rock bands. Australia has served us with artists ranging drastically in style and sound but has never disappointed. Artists such as the powerhouse AC/DC, the melodic soft rock Little River Band, or the heavy rock band Wolfmother, and many many more have all had international success and a big influence on the rock and roll scene. Now that we are in the 2010’s it is time to add a new band to this list. Although they are not at the same level as the other bands just yet they are making their way up the latter slowly but surely. With the release of their debut album “Hex.Lover.Killer” The Delta Riggs have made quite an impact. From the very first track you are hooked. Their upbeat rebellious sound will leave you wanting more. This album is one to instantly put on repeat. This album includes singles “America”, “Rah Rah Radio”, and “Better” which I highly recommend. You can find this album on their website www.thedeltariggs.com or you can listen to it for free on their soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/thedeltariggs.
